While the whole internet guesses when the iPhone 18 will finally be shown, we have already reached for a magnifying glass and a rumour decoder. It looks as though this year Apple has decided to make the Pro Max not merely the “big brother” but a genuine monster with exclusive features. Insiders say the gap between the Pro and the Pro Max will for the first time go beyond screen size and battery, reaching the key specifications.

The main rumour concerns cooling. Word is that the Pro Max will get an improved heat management system — possibly a vapour chamber — which the smaller model will not have. For anyone pushing heavy video editing or games, that means stable frame rates without throttling, and no body that starts to resemble a frying pan. A phone that does not overheat is a phone that keeps running at full power instead of quietly stepping down.

The second point is the camera. According to analysts, the Pro Max alone may receive a new generation of periscope zoom, while the Pro keeps the current module. If so, the choice becomes obvious for anyone who shoots concerts or wildlife: either you take the compact Pro, or you pay for the Max and photograph the Moon with its craters. These are rumours for now, but insiders agree that splitting the line-up is a deliberate move by Apple to push buyers towards the more expensive model.

On the remaining specifications both models will most likely share the same A19 Pro chip and the new design. The devil, though, is in the details: if the Max gets the better battery and that zoom, the price difference will stop arguing with common sense and start arguing with plain desire. All that is left is to wait for the official presentation and keep guessing — and in the meantime it is safe to assume the most patient buyers will once again be queuing overnight.

By the way, if your current device takes offence and “accidentally” breaks on the eve of the announcement, you know where to drop by, don't you? 😉
